Jaffna, Sri Lanka – April 25, 2025 – GSM News
National People’s Power’s candidate for Mayor of Jafna Municipal Council, Kabilan Suntharamoorthy, has come out swinging in the important local council elections. President Anura Kumara Disanayake launched the campaign for Jaffna Mayor candidate, sources close to NPP say Suntharamoorthy is upcoming key figure in the party.
Jaffna seat is key for the Sri Lanka NPP’s strategy for long term viability and maintaining as well growing the voter base that allowed current Sri Lankan President Anura to rise to power.
According to Mr. Suntharamoorthy, a respected academic and former Former Senior Lecturer at University of Jaffna, “…the Jaffna census is around 830,000 in 1981 and around 620,000 in 2022 (Assessment and Statistics Department Guide 1981, 2022, Sri Lanka). If the domestic growth from 1947 to 1981 continued the same journey, Jaffna be the actual census in 2025 would have been around 1,350,000 starting up to 1,500,000. The reason for the backslide of the population increase till 2015 is the legal reforms and riots since the late 1970s and migrations that occurred, the war for the nation’s liberation until 2009, the migration and the dead and disappeared relationships.”
This census is in a permanent situation in a resurrection or resurrection fighting society after the war of 2015. If 10 years of development after 2015 until 2025, this population would have been reduced and risen to a top position. If it had been corrected, our district would have been 850,000 starting to 1,050,000 today due to growth since 2015. Unfortunately in the decade period of 2015 until 2025, many people especially our youth and women have not only faced migration but also increased the tradition to pack up and move to the upper province domestic.
Root cause for such incidents include; one of these is that the opportunity to live by fulfilling economic needs is not found in Jaffna, resources are limited to few people and investor development is paralysed only to a single master. So some strive toward the past financial stability as the foundation of a safe economy, many of them are travelling with taking on debt.
The economic crisis in the country (2019 – 2024) has instigated many to migrate and migration is causing a collapse of society in Jaffna. The second threat in social security. It is undeniable that addiction, personal insecurity, equality and lack of equality in education has contributed hugely to issues of crime and migration.
The bitter truth is that these developmental or slow development positions have been a rejection factor and instigated our family to migrate.
The western economy and society charges are both developmentally planned and structured towards development based on location, economy and society.
“We are well aware that the internal forces have most of the shops that need to build them. Developmental politics or even politics internal development; the previous documentary in the giant structure would not have turned into a challenge to our existence of tradition, or the change could have been reduced.” said Mr. Kabilan Suntharamoorthy speaking to GSM News.
The reality is that if this situation continues, the higher province and the migrant’s ghost towns may be triggered at double speed, there will be no chance to reduce this burden. “Reducing representation for legislative assembly in the future, and questioning our presence for justice and execution will come next. Everyone is aware that this will lead to justification for massive regional and social development.” Mr. Kabilan Suntharamoorthy explained his vision.
Considering this to keep our presence strong first then reduce the demand for migration of our relations towards the Upper province, rethink migrants by bringing economic opportunity in our country without competing in global industrialist competitions, in order to create direct investment of our relations across our country and make our current economic. According to Mr. Kabilan Suntharamoorthy Jaffna residents must think of what is more for us to rebuild as a traditional society of structured and now thinking ways to make development possible.
“We as National People’s Power, the guarantee we give to our people is that the roots that have challenged our existence at the internal level will not change a Jaffna and its cultural heritage that develops and meet the needs of the people. It is like we will struggle for water. Our thirst is strong. We will find the river. ” Mr. Kabilan Suntharamoorthy reassured voters while speaking to GSM News.
Kabilan Suntharamoorthy has long history of key leadership roles in academia, charitable organisations and mentoring for Sri Lankan as well as international youth leaders making him a beloved figure in Jaffna proper as well as across South Asia.
A champion of reform for Jaffna and according to many one key intellect behind NPP and President Anura policies, Mr. Kabilan Suntharamoorthy says his heart is open for discussions with others and advises voters to vote their conscience and heart, most importantly vote for the compass this time.
