Malé, Maldives – On 22 May 2025, the Maldives Police Service issued a press statement claiming that the family of Yumn, the Maldivian woman at the centre of a widely followed investigation, has not been cooperating with their inquiries. Yumn is currently receiving medical treatment in Malaysia.
In the statement, the Maldives Police revealed that two of their officers, including a licensed medical doctor, are stationed in Malaysia to follow developments in the case. However, the police alleged that they were not informed by the family when Yumn was transferred to a different hospital, a move they say has impeded the investigation.
The Maldives Police also announced that they would be enlisting the help of Malaysian Police Service in obtaining an official statement from Yumn. This development marks a new phase in the transnational aspect of the case, as Maldivian authorities seek to move forward in cooperation with their Malaysian counterparts.
No timeline was provided for when the statement will be taken or what procedures will be followed, but the involvement of the Malaysian Police signals formal cross-border collaboration in a case that has already stirred significant public concern and protest within the Maldives.
The police reiterated their commitment to pursuing a complete and fair investigation. Meanwhile, the family of Yumn has not publicly responded to the allegations of non-cooperation.
The case continues to be a focal point for national debate in the Maldives, raising wider concerns about police conduct, survivors’ rights, and systemic reform.
This comes at a time when human rights organisations and lawyers associations across the world and South Asia continue to call for justice and raise concerns about president Mohamed unduly removing two woman supreme court justices. Even the United Nations has expressed concern regarding the state of the Maldives judiciary.
